Good morning!

So far we have covered these books in the Bible:

Genesis
Exodus
Leviticus
Numbers
Deuteronomy
Joshua
Judges
Ruth
1 Samuel
2 Samuel

Now we are going to do 1 & 2 Kings, dropping off the numbers when we make our words.

We are not certain who wrote these books of Kings, possibly Jeremiah, the prophet. These books were written between 640 and 550 B.C.

1 Kings covers a time period of about 130 years and shares the histoy of the kings who ruled Israel and Judah. 1 Kings begins by tracing Solomon's rise to kingship after the death of David. It tells of Solomon's reign as king, his wealth and wisdom. The time of Solomon's kingship was a special time for the Jewish people and tells us of the construction of the Temple bult to honor God. But after his death there is a division in the kingdom with his son Rehoboam ruling over Judah (Southern Kingdom) and Jeroboam ruling over Israel (Northern Kingdom). This book ends in telling the miracles and ministry of the prophet Elijah, especially in contrast to Israel's most wicked King, Ahab.

2 Kings covers about 293 years, from the time of the prophet Elisha to the captivity of Judah. It tells of the downfall of the divided kingdom. Prophets continue to warn the people that the judgment of God is at hand, but they will not repent. The kingdom of Israel is ruled by wicked kings, and even though there are a few of Judah's kings who are good, most of them are bad. These few good rulers, along with Elisha and other prophets, cannot stop the nation's decline. In time Israel is destroyed by the Assyrians and about 136 laters the kingdom of Judah is destroyed by the Babylonians. Though the people of God are in captivity, God stays true to His Covenant, preserving a remnant for Himself.

Both 1 and 2 Kings are named such because it covers the histoy of the kings who ruled Israel and Judah.
