Making Words from the Bible - September 23, 2007

This week the books of the Bible are Isaiah and Jeremiah. The first book was written by the prophet Isaiah, between 745 and 680 B.C. While Isaiah lived in Jerusalem at this time, a great deal of his ministry is directed at Judah. Isaiah tells the people of the coming judgment that is coming to the people who have turned away from God and His ways. Yet, he also encourages them, telling them that all they need do is repent and turn back to God who desires to forgive them. Isaiah also prophecies of the coming Messiah, a “suffering Servant” who will be born to a virgin and bring salvation to the world. He does not call Jesus by name, but there is no doubt that is who he is speaking of for it is only Jesus who followed all the prophecies about the coming Messiah/Savior. Over 700 years before the birth of Jesus Christ, God spoke to His prophets to declare His coming. Surely, the Bible, His Written Word, was inspired by the Holy Spirit and given to men to write down so that we would know of His faithfulness. How awesome is our God!

Jeremiah is another book named after the prophet that wrote it. It was written between 627 and 580 B.C. When this book was being written, the last good king, Josiah had just started his reign but four evil kings took over before the writing of this book was finished.
Like Isaiah, Jeremiah was called by God to warn Judah and the surrounding nations of God’s judgment that was about to come. It is not God’s desire that the wicked should die, but God is a just God and unrighteousness cannot have free control. We are all called to do as God says to do. There are people who do not want to listen to what God has to say. They are called stiff necked and they will have to answer for their behavior.
