This weeks books of the Bible are Joel and Amos. Joel was written between 835 and 800 B.C. This book is written by the prophet Joel and his ministry covers the time Judah is attached by a large horde of locusts that destroys all the vineyards, trees, gardens and fields of grain. Using symbolism, Joel compares the locust as a army of men, marching against Judah and bringing God’s judgment against this nation because of her sins.

Amos was written between 760 and 753 B.C. by Amos who was a shepherd and fruit picker in the village of Tekoa in Judah. He did not have formal education nor was he instructed as a priest, yet God called him to bring a message to a neighboring people. To be an instrument of God we do not need to go to college or be born into a rich family. What God is looking for is our willingness to serve Him in any way He asks us. So, that means God can use you and I in His service. Isn’t that great to know! Amos brought a message of warning to Israel about what is about to happen to her because of her sins against God. But because times seem to be going well in Israel, the people do not heed Amos’s warning. Let us never turn a deaf ear to God’s messengers. Rather, let us always be open to being warned if we are sinning and then let us turn away from our sins and come back to God in obedience to His will, amen? Amen.
