Hebrews 6:1,16-20 - Our Anchor
February 29, 2008 05:01PM
“Therefore let us go in and get past the elementary stage in the teachings and doctrine of Christ (the Messiah), advancing steadily toward the completeness and perfection that belong to spiritual maturity. Let us not again be laying the foundation of repentance and abandonment of dead works (dead formalism) and of the faith [by which you turned] to God.… Men I indeed swear by a greater [than themselves], and with them in all disputes the oath taken for confirmation is final [ending strife]. Accordingly God also, in his desire to show more convincingly and beyond doubt to those who were to inherit the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose and plan, intervened (mediated) with an oath. This was so that, by two unchangeable things [His promise and His oath] in which it is impossible for God ever to prove false or deceive us, we who have fled [to Him] for refuge might have mighty indwelling strength and strong encouragement to grasp and hold fast the hope appointed for us and set before [us]. [Now] we have this [hope] as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul [it cannot slip and it cannot break down under whoever steps out upon it - a hope] that reaches farther and enters into [the very certainty of the Presence] within the veil, where Jesus has entered in for us [in advance], a Forerunner having become a High Priest forever after the order (with the rank) of Melchizedek.” Hebrews 6:1,16-20

As we look at these words in Hebrews we see that God desires that we advance from the “elementary” stages of our walk with Jesus Christ going beyond the place of our salvation in Him and moving forward toward the goal of completeness and perfection in Him, a place of spiritual maturity. Many stay at that place of spiritual immaturity, taking the salvation they have been given through Christ Jesus and not going beyond it, continually asking for redemption (which has already been given them!) and seeking it through their works as if these works could save them (which is a fruitless effort for we are not saved by our works but by the grace of God given to by Christ’s life, death and resurrection.)

God has made an oath with man that He would show him/her His purpose and plan that He has, has had from the beginning of time and that He will bring forth for each one who believes on Him through His Son. Jesus is the anchor of our hope and of our promise and He, Christ Jesus, has set the course that we are to follow. It is Christ Jesus that has given us the right to enter into the Holy of Holies, into the very Presence of our God and our Father. Thank You, Jesus! Jesus is the anchor of our soul and the life of our spirit, glory to God! And this Anchor rests not just in heaven but on earth as well and this is what we need to grow to see. As we walk life’s highways and byways there will be times storms seem to rise up against us. If we recognize Jesus as our anchor we know that there is nothing that can separate us from His love, from His strength. We can be deceived to think that we are separated from Him but that comes from a place of spiritual immaturity, a place that lacks understanding and a knowledge of God’s love for His people and His plan for their lives.

In the natural we know that once a ship’s anchor is cast into the sea that ship will stay secure in it’s place. It might still have to ride the waves of a turbulent storm, it might even sustain some structural damage to it’s exterior but it will not be moved beyond the place where the anchor is securely fastened. And this is how we must see our lives in standing with our heavenly Father when we are one with our Lord Jesus Christ, our Anchor. Though we might have to ride life’s storms getting battered here and there, Jesus is the anchor that holds us firmly in place of right standing with the Father. Praise be to God!!! It is not our works that accomplishes this, it is our faith in the Son of God that acts like a link uniting us with Christ Jesus who secures our place with Him in the heavenlies! Can you grasp hold of this? Can you see what God has given us through His Beloved Son? Can you understand how secure our relationship is with God because of Jesus Christ? Oh Lord, open our eyes that we might see that which You are telling us, that we might see Your dear Son as our anchor, as our Blessed Assurance, in His sweet Name we pray. Amen.

I read these words a short time ago, “Fear says, ‘if I do not cling to Jesus I am doomed.’ Faith says, ‘If Jesus does not hold to me I am doomed.” Let us walk in faith as we hold fast to the words in Jude 24, “Now to Him Who is able to keep you without stumbling or slipping or falling, and to present [you] unblemished (blameless and faultless) before the presence of His glory in triumphant joy and exultation [with unspeakable, ecstatic delight] - to the one only God, our Savior through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory (splendor), majesty, might and dominion, and power and authority, before all time and now and forever (unto all the ages of eternity). Amen. And AMEN!
