v 3 “Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;” {Psalm 103:3}

A few days ago I wrote and tried to explain the differences of sin, transgressions, and iniquities. If you will take the time to meditate on Isaiah 59:12 {For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them;}, maybe this will give you the understanding from our Fathers point of view.

Today I would like to focus on forgiveness of iniquities in the Old Testament.

The earliest mention of a form of forgiveness is in Leviticus 16:21 {And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness: } There were two goats chosen for this ceremony and the high priest {who at this time was Aaron} would pick one to carry {confess over him} all the iniquities of the people away from the people {and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:} there to presumably die, as the iniquities of the people were suppose to die {be cleansed}. The other goat you ask, stayed with the people as a reminder of that with they had confessed.

Psalm 51:9 is David’s personal plea to God to forgive his iniquities possibility for having Uriah the Hittite killed and the taking of Uriah‘s wife Bathsheba? Psalm 103:3 and 130:8 asks for the forgiveness of all the people.

Isaiah 53:5, Jeremiah 33:8, and Micah 7:19 also tell of God’s mercy in forgiving iniquity and casting it into the sea.

Why so much on forgiveness of iniquities in the Old Testament, this is because whichever “sin” is committed, when you confess your sin and ask forgiveness of the Father, your sin is forgiven. There is no distinction with God, a sin is a sin and he forgives and forgets each one in a like manor.

We all have sinned, we all have transgressed, and some of us may even have committed iniquity, but our Father’s great love for each and everyone of us and his unending gift of forgiveness has washed each of us “as white as snow”.
