Day 2 - Isaiah 7-14 & Matthew 1:20-23 - February 25, 2016

"Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign. Behold, the young woman who is unmarried and a virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanual [God with us]." Isaiah 7:14

"But as he was thinking this over, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, descendant of David, do not be afraid to take Mary [as] your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of (from out of) the Holy Spirit. She will bear a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus [the Greek from of the Hebrew Joshua, which means Savior], for He will save His people from their sins [that is, prevent them from failing and missing the true end and scope of life, which is God]. All this took place that it might be fulfilled which the Lord had spoken through the prophet. Behold, the virgin shall become pregnant and give birth to a Son, and they shall cal His name Emmanuel-which, when translated, means God with us."
Matthew 1:20-23

Emmanuel, God with us, praise be to God! Think about the blessing we have been given through Jesus Christ, God with us, made available to every man, woman and child who believed on Him! The fellowship that was forfeited in the garden was restored to man through God's precious Son. Glory! Glory!

Last month we focused on the many benefits of God and the need for us to bless God for all He has done lest we be like ungrateful children. This month we focus on the foretelling of our Messiah given to the prophets of old and the fulfillment of them as written in the New Testament. Many times people will approach us and ask why we believe the Jesus is the true Son of God and the only way to the Father. Oftentimes our answer is "I believe it by faith." While this is true and we must believe it by faith for without faith it is impossible to please God (Hebrews 11:6) we also have to be aware that the Lord would not have us ignorant in these matters so that we can share His truth to others.

The prophet Isaiah lived in Jerusalem in the eighth century B.C. and this particular chapter [7] was written in 735 B.C. The sign that God had prophesied here had never happened before and has not happened since where a woman was impregnated by the Holy Spirit. Indeed, this was a sign that only God could do. Could you imagine the ears of the hearer of this word, a virgin bring forth a child? How impossible that might have sounded but maybe not, depending on where their faith in the One True God was.

Today these words in Isaiah 7 are easy for us to believe because we have the fulfillment of the prophecy having already come to pass. We know that Jesus, Emmanuel, lived and died for our sins. That aspect of His birth has already been confirmed, written down in history books. Maybe we sometimes have a problem accepting the fact that He has forgiven ALL our sins, no matter whether big or small, it doesn't change the fact of what He did for us. In these cases it is only our faith that is lacking not the provisions God has given us through His Son Jesus Christ.

Hmmm. I was thinking. If we submit ourselves to God and trust in Him fully, I wonder what things He desires to impregnate us with. Many of us are already with His will, His plans for our lives but it is not yet time to give birth. Others are long overdue because our bodies are not willing to yield that which has been birthed in us. My prayer for the latter is that your faith will be built up and that you will know that nothing is impossible with God through Christ Jesus. Amen and amen.
