Read the New Testament in Three Months

October 21 - Luke 2 - 3

These chapters cover a lot time, from when Mary is with child and she and Joseph travel to Bethlehem to register for the census Caesar Augustus ordered to Jesus being baptized by John the baptist, at about thirty years of age! Quite a time span in two chapters!

What stood out in today's reading is Luke 3:7-8, "Here is a sample of Johns preaching to the crowds that came for baptism:'You brood of snakes! You are trying to escape jell without turning to God! That is why you want to be baptized! First go and prove by the way you live that you really have repented. And don't think you are safe because you are the descendants of Abraham. That isn't enough. God can produce children of Abraham from these desert stones!'" (LBE)

Ouch! John wasn't messing around. And neither shall we. The Jewish people thought because they were descendants of Abraham that it entitled them to be baptized, to be washed clean. That is not the case and we need to understand what John is saying here applies to us as well. Just because our parents or grandparents came to Christ, that does not mean that we are covered by their walk with Him! And just believing in Jesus is not going to save us either. Satan and his demons believe He is who He says He is and they surely aren't saved! When we truly receive Jesus as Lord, we do just that - receive Him as our Lord. As such we have a change of heart as well as of spirit. We recognize that we have to change our way of doing things and learn how to do things His way. We are to renew our minds to His. Repentance is a normal part of our new creation in Him. What grieves Him should grieve us as well. It is a journey. We do not get there automatically. The more we lean on Him and open ourselves to His ways, the more we learn about Him and can become like Him if we submit to these lteachngs. If you don't see a change in your life after several months of accepting Jesus as Lord, then you should be questioning if you really made Him your Lord!
