Read the New Testament in Three Months

October 22 - Luke 6 - 7

Father, we want to take the time to thank You for both the written Word of God and the Revealed Word of God. How incredible to read these accounts that tell of Your heart towards us and Your will for us. As a good Father, You strive to teach us to live in a way that will bring us a blessed and joyous life. Your corrections are not to crush us but to build us up to become mighty sons and daughters who honor You and honor one another. Help us to live that life that is righteous shown to us through Your Son, Jesus Christ and it is in His Name we pray. Amen.

In today's reading I am going to focus on "the law of love" found in Luke 6:27-31. Though these two chapters cover a lot of wonderful information and guidance such as the in the beatitudes and woes, healing of the captain's servant and much more, it is on these verses that is so important for us to learn and live these truths, especially when there is so much unrest in our country, among churches and even in families.

"But to you who are listening I say: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you. If someone slaps you on one cheek , turn to them the other also. If someone takes your coat, do not withhold your shirt fro them. Give to everyone who asks you, um and if anyone takes what belongs to you do not demand it back. Do for others as you would have them do to you."

What we just read is what Jesus did when He walked upon the earth. He walked in love and we are told to be transformed into His image. Now this is not easy things to do with our flesh. Our flesh wants to be vindicated, appreciated and when hurt, often wants revenge. All those things are of the flesh but we are not told to walk by the flesh but by the spirit. When we accept Jesus as our Lord we become a new creation, one that now has the empowerment of God's Spirit within us to do the same things Jesus did and even greater. That's pretty amazing. But it doesn't come easy. It is a journey and process in which we learn to submit to the will of God and take on Jesus' character, becoming like minded with Him.

To walk in love and do good to our enemies where everything in our natural man screams against it is a step in drawing more like our Beloved Lord When someone hurts us and we choose to walk in forgiveness rather than retaliation is walking like Jesus. If someone steals from us because they have a need and we gladly give them more to help them out knowing that our God will supply all of our needs, well, we walk in faith and that pleases God, Hallelujah! Most of us have heard of the golden rule and it is the very thing Jesus spoke about in the last verse here, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Short verse but very powerful. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to do just that, treat others as we'd want to be treated - whether they deserve it or not because the truth is, we do not deserve God's forgiveness either, nor His goodness but He gives it to us freely...
