Read the New Testament in Three Months

October 30 - Luke 21 - 22

How wonderful it is to read of Jesus' birth, of the many miracles He performed, the wisdom and love He gave so freely, His humbleness in serving rather than being served. It truly is amazing and, oh how we who are His so want to walk as He walked upon the earth, showing the goodness of God to a lost and dying world. Yet as we come to Luke 21 and 22 we see the true reason why Christ Jesus came. The miracles and blessings are the benefit of obedience and love to God. The sacrifice we see in these chapters are more challenging to our human flesh. Our flesh desires those blessings and comfort, to sacrifice is a different thing. We see it in the disciples. We read about Jesus telling them what He was going to suffer at the Passover dinner, presenting the wine as His blood and the bread as His broken body given up for them, for us. He even tells how one of them is going to betray Him yet that train of thought is quickly given up by them as they squabble about who among them was the greatest! How frail and  self seeking is humanity without the Spirit of God! Further reading into chapter 22 of Luke we see where Jesus undergoes great agony knowing the task that is set before Him on having the sins of mankind carried by Him that He would take our sins upon Himself. How intense was that time for Him  that He sweat was as drops of blood falling to the ground. Sweet Jesus! We can only imagine what He must have felt at that time. And what were His disciples who were not that far from Him doing? Were they there to comfort Him, to love upon Him, to thank Him for what He was going through on their/our behalf? They were fast asleep as our many of us when He calls upon us, when He needs us to be His hands and feet upon the earth, His mouth declaring the Good News to a world that needs to hear it....
