Read New Testament in Three Months
November 24 - 1 Corinthians 1 - 4
1 Corinthians was written by Paul to the church in Corinth between 55-57 A.D. At that time there was many issues taking place within the church that needed addressing and that is what Paul is doing through this letter.
Paul starts out by speaking blessings upon them and letting them know that He thanks God for them and all God has given them to be fully equipped to do what He has called them to do. He then goes on to share his heart in their need to stop their quarreling among them. In yesterday's reading in Romans we see how Paul lets them know how important unity is within the church. It appears there is a real need for this message to be heard and acted upon for we see how division creeps in to cause chaos within the church! Let us not take lightly how important it is for us to be one body in Christ, working together for His purposes and glory.
In Chapter 3 Paul lets them know that He is sharing simple spiritual truths with them because they are showing themselves as babes in the Lord by their arguments with each other. Their very actions show how immature they are! Paul lets them know that it is about sharing the Gospel and not about making a name for one's self. God uses the foolish things of this world to confound the wise. We are not to follow after any man but after our Lord, Jesus Christ, for the glory of God.
In the next chapter Paul warns them about the danger of having favorite teachers. We must not esteem one above the other but to remember who God sent forth to share the Good News with them. It appears, over time, that they had forgotten the firm foundation upon which they had set their faith and their hearts. God forbid that we should ever forget that it s Christ alone who has bought and paid for us and set us free, using His Word and will displayed by faithful servants and written down for us to follow...
