Read New Testament in Three Months

December 7 - 1 Thessalonians 1 - 5

This book was written between 50 and 51 D.D., being Paul's first recorded letter to the church at Thessaonica. This city is a bustling with activity as it is a trade center and seaport with many people. As Paul ministered here, he brought many to faith in Christ Jesus, not a welcome thing for those who are non-believers and bringing persecution to the saints. Because of the heavy persecution, Paul flees from there and goes to another city, followed by angry Jews who want to cause trouble to Paul and other believers. Paul leaves this city and ends up in Corinth. Timothy had been left in Thessonica and Paul awaits an update from him on how the church is doing there. After receiving it, Paul writes this letter as a response to Timothy's report.

It is good to get perspective of when these letters/books were written so that we have a greater understanding of the times the people of God lived in and the challenges they faced. Even today we know that many are persecuted in other nations for their faith in Christ but we, the Western church, has not had that type of persecution take place here and therefore often forget the trials and tribulations that believers have gone through just in having faith in Christ Jesus, never mind declaring it. It also makes us mindful that the first century church quickly was hit with dark forces trying to let them astray from the simplicity and beauty of Jesus' sacrifice upon the cross, the power of His resurrection and the transition from death unto life in Him means to us who 'are born again' in Him. We are now seeing persecution taking place all over the world, even in America though not to the degree in other nations. If we truly want to see a great move of God then we best be prepared to pay the price that others have paid to see God's Kingdom and His Word advance. We must grow in Christ and live for Him. To God be the glory!

In the first chapter of 1 Thessalonians, Paul praises the church, giving thanks to God for them. He sees how they are being living examples of Christ to others, non believers as well. Is that not how we are to walk before men, being living epistles read by all men? Before receiving Jesus they people had walked after false idols, now they are following the One true God (1 Thessalonians 1:9). Hallelujah!

Paul continues to say to them that they are the fruit of his and others labor and that they rejoice in them. Even though he and others had been hindered from coming to them, by way of Timothy he received the news of their faithfulness and continued walk in and after Christ. Paul encourages them to stay steadfast in their walk, be not discouraged by those who have passed on for those who are in Christ are asleep and will return with Him, whose coming again was before them and is to fill them with hope and promise.

Read on as Paul tells the church in Thessonalonica  to be diligent and alert to Christ's second coming and for them not to slumber not as others do but to continue on in faithfulness, laboring in Christ for His glory. Amen and amen!
