December 11 - Titus 1 - 3 and Philemon

Titus was a Greek Gentile convert from  Antioch and who ministered with Paul in different places. This letter written to him  by Paul between 63 and 65 A.D. is Paul's desire to help guide him in the ways to build the church, reminding him the importance of good works, not for salvation but for the glory of God. Paul also shares how we are to walk in love for one another, pure before God and examples to others, not just by our works and labor but also by the purity of our hearts before Him.

Titus is another letter by Paul directly to Philemon, his family and the church in Colosse. Philemon is from Colosse, an owner of slaves and a wealthy Christian. One of his slaves, Onesimus, ran away to Rome and becomes a believer while there and was with Paul. but Paul recognizes that it is only fair that he send Onesimus back to his owner, Philemon., including this letter from Paul to Onesimus. This letter also was written when Paul was in prison. Paul uses Onesimus' position as slave to tell his owner how we are all to be slaves for Christ. He focuses on the fact that sins against one another is also a sin against God and ought to be considered. Just as we have been forgiven our sins through Christ, we ought also forgive others sins against us.. We can see that Philemon takes this message to heart as he frees Onesimus so that he can return to Paul.

In Titus we see Paul telling him the need to raise up leaders in the church and states the qualifications they should have. He warns him to be aware of false teachers, for there are many out there, not only then but today as well. He further explains the importance of teaching others, being an example to the young and those watching, walking in sound doctrine and purity. God has set before us His action plan for us to walk after and that it is why it is so important to read God's Word and follow the instruction given to us. One day we will be held accountable for what we do and don't do in our walk upon the earth. To say you believe in God but do not follow His ways and His wills is like driving a car without gas. It won't take you far and certainly won't get you to the destination you hope for!

Paul writes to Philemon on behalf of Onesimus, asking him to receive him not as a slave but higher than that, for Onesimus has been a great help to Paul in ministering.  He seeks that he be pardoned by his actions of running away and that Philemon understand Paul's love for Onesimus and what he has done, as a fellow servant in Christ. Forgiveness, a very much needed part of every believers walk towards other...
