Matthew 9:27 - Son Of David
January 09, 2008 06:46AM
“As Jesus passed on from there, two blind men followed Him, shouting loudly, Have pity and mercy on us, Son of David.” Matthew 9:27

In reading the gospels we find many accounts of where Jesus is referred to as the Son of David. Yet we might ask ourselves how this can be since David lived a 1,000 years before Christ! The more we study Scripture the more we find the beauty and authenticity of God’s Word, marveling at the prophetic words given in the Old Testament and seeing the fulfillment of much of it in the New Testament. God’s Word is like a majestic tapestry delicately woven together, one thread upon another and only through concentrated observation can the stitching that brings it all together be seen. Glory to God!

The Jewish people were a people who observed God’s Word for it was carried down from generation to generation. They were taught to meditate upon it and they knew of the words of the prophets and the promises given to David and others. And they, themselves, looked to the promise of the coming Messiah Who would free them from the bondage they now found themselves in under Roman rule.

These two blind men we read about in the gospel of Matthew were mindful of the Holy Scriptures and the words of the prophets. And they must have heard of the signs, miracles and wonders that followed Jesus Christ. They looked for His healing touch to bring back their own sight and used what was available to them, their voices, to cry out to Him. Ah, how often do we allow our weaknesses, our “handicaps” to keep us from perusing that which we desire in our lives? Not so for these two men. They used that which they had, though less than others, to attain what they sought. That in itself is a lesson to each of us. With their voices they aggressively (‘shouting loudly‘) called to Jesus, “Have pity and mercy on us Son of David.” These men knew that Jesus was He that was written about hundreds and hundreds of years before, and that He was the fulfillment of the prophesy of the seed of David. We ourselves can read where their understanding of this came from in 2 Samuel 7:12-13, 16-17, “And when your days are fulfilled and you sleep with your fathers, I will set up after you your offspring who shall be born to you, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for My Name [and My Presence], and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever…And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before you; your throne shall be established forever. In accordance with all these words and all this vision, Nathan [God’s prophet] spoke to David.”

And how like God to use those without their sight to represent ones who “saw” Jesus as the Son of David! God’s Word says in 1 Corinthians 1:26-27, “For [simply] consider your own call, brethren; not many of you were considered to be] wise according to human estimates and standards, not many influential and powerful, not many of high and noble birth. [No] for God selected (deliberately chose) what in the world is foolish to put the wise to shame, and what the worlds calls weak to put the strong to shame.” Normally those who were found with some weakness such as blindness were thought to be accursed by God because of sin in their lives (as we read of the account in John 9:1) yet we read in Matthew 9 how God used these ‘weak’ blind men as being ones who knew Jesus was the Son of David and yet the wise, well learned scribes and Pharisees could not “see” Jesus for Who He was! Hallelujah!

All glory and honor unto Christ Jesus, the Son of David, the Son of the One True Living God. Like David, Jesus Christ will one day reign as King of kings and His kingdom will know no end, as was prophesied to David by the prophet Nathan. How glorious is the Word of God and how exceedingly rich is the blessings He has given us through His Son Jesus Christ. Praise You King Jesus, now and ever more. Amen and amen!
