Mark 1:24 - Holy One of God
February 16, 2008 07:56AM
“What have You to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have You come to destroy us: I know who You are - the Holy One of God!” Mark 1:24

Jesus, the Holy One of God! In this verse in Mark it is the unclean spirits that are talking to Jesus. They recognized who He was and they recognized that He had the power and ability to destroy them. There was no doubt that He was the Holy One of God. Strange isn’t it that demons could recognize who He was while many people living at that time could not? Even today we see that same situation taking place where people do not recognize who Jesus is and the power and authority that He possesses. Even those who call themselves Christians do not see the full dimension of Jesus, seeing Him only as their Savior and not as Judge who will assess the works of their lives as whether they walked faithfully for God or not.

Jesus, the Holy One of God! He who knew no sin took the sin of the world upon His shoulders so that we could be cleansed by His sacrificial blood and be presented holy before the Father, restoring the fellowship that was lost in the garden because of disobedience. In 1 Peter 1:16-17 we read, “For it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy. And if you call upon Him as [your] Father Who judge each one impartially according to what he does, [then] you should conduct yourselves with true reverence throughout the time of your temporary residence [on the earth, whether long or short].” We are to be holy as He is holy. Yes, it is Jesus’ sacrifice that saved us but our walk with the Lord does not stop there. We are to live our lives in obedience to the will of God and it is because Jesus now lives in us that we are able to do this. The more of ourselves that is submitted to the will of God and His Spirit the more of our Lord is giving room to rise up in our lives. We are sons and daughters of the most High God and like Jesus we are to be Holy Ones of God who display the characters of our heavenly Father and our Lord Jesus Christ to a lost and dying world. Is it possible that we can be holy like He is holy? Yes! Yes! Yes! His Spirit that abides in us is already holy now we have to submit and align our minds and bodies to His authority allowing Jesus to reign as King in our lives seeking His will and not our own. How many of us have followed after someone admiring their abilities which out shined ours. Did we not desire to be like them? How many of us desire to be like Jesus knowing that is God’s desire for us? When we read the words “you shall be holy, for I am holy” they are first found in Leviticus 11:44 when God spoke them to His people after He brought them out of Egypt. Long before Jesus came to earth that was God’s will, that His people be holy as He is holy. God sent His Son to see this come to pass, to enable the people in a way that the law could not do for through His Son He brought His Holy Spirit not only upon His people but in His people. Hallelujah! Praise You Father! Thank You Jesus!

Jesus, the Holy One of God longs to see the people of God walk in His footsteps. He has not only showed us what it means to be holy, He continues to speak of this holiness today if we care to listen. When Jesus walked the earth the demons recognized who He was. We need to do this as well, not only recognizing who He is but submitting to His authority and His leadership and reaching toward the goal of “being holy as He is holy” remembering that it is not our works that save us. When we fellowship with the Lord we feel His love and His tenderness. It is in this place of safety and gratitude that we in turn love Him. Jesus spoke these words, “If ye love me, keep My commandments” (John 14:15). Well, we can see how much we truly love Him by being aware of whether or not we keep His commandments. Are we striving to be holy as He is holy or are we living our lives for our own self-gain?

Lord, open our spiritual eyes that we might see You in truth and not in our preconceived notions of You. Help us to be holy as You are holy for we know we cannot do it without You. May You be blessed this day as we seek You in all humbleness and meekness, in Your name we pray. Amen.
